political scientists, sociologists and cultural scientists) to the problem of defining the boundaries of historical and cultural regions, their characteristics and regional identity. The features of application by American authors of historical-geographical (including sectional), sociological, postmodern approaches, and the method of quantitative analysis to the identification of the country&#8217;s cultural regions and regional identity are considered. The study of the historical and cultural areas of the country has long been influenced by the polemics of two approaches &#8212; sectional and regionalist, to which modern authors also turn. The original characteristic historical areas have been New England (North), West, and South, but as ethnic composition and socioeconomic dynamics have changed, the borders of the regions and their images have been and continue to be revised. It is noted that comparative analysis and quantitative research methods have made a significant contribution to the study of regional identity, allowing comparison of the values, images and
